HIGH
VISCOSITY
Rotary pumps are generally used for liquids with a viscosity greater than
water. This type of pump can handle liquids ranging from a thin lubricating
oil to heavy bitumen and polymers. With this design, the pumped liquid
forms a seal from the high pressure to low pressure areas, although some
flow will occur across this area and is termed slippage. This will reduce
the actual pumped capacity which will depend on the pump design, (i.e.
clearances used), the pressure differential, and viscosity of the liquid.
The pump bearings can be lubricated by the pumped liquid, or located externally
to be lubricated separately.
The pumps are a positive displacement type, and as such the pumps and
systems should be protected by a relief valve to allow a by pass flow
in the event that the discharge line is inadvertently closed, which would
cause the pressure while the pump is running to rise to a dangerous level.
