LOW
FLOW / HIGH HEAD
This area does not generally work well with centrifugal pumps, as they
are typically operating to the far left of their best efficiency point
(BEP) with potential problems associated with this, as well as being on
the flat portion of the curve, making capacity control difficult. Three
main ways of resolving this problem are to use:
1) Reciprocating
pumps (plunger and diaphragm type)
2) Rotary
pumps (gear, screw, vane)
3) Regenerative
turbine and side channel pumps
The basic advantage of the reciprocating pump is its ability to generate
very high pressures with a well controlled flow, the rotary pump can handle
very viscous liquids. Regenerative turbine and side channel pumps give
a steep controllable performance curve and low NPSHR characteristics.
